I didn’t catch the wolf super moon at its peak, but I was able to grab a few moody, cloud-filled photos the night before. January’s full moon is known as the Wolf Moon, a name inspired by the howling of wolves often heard during the heart of winter. Historically, this was a time when cold temperatures and scarce food made survival difficult, and the sound of wolves became closely associated with the season.

The name traces back to both Native American and European traditions, where wolves were long linked to midwinter nights. This year, much of the United States was blanketed by clouds and snow, making viewing a challenge for many. The clearest skies — and the best opportunities to see the Wolf Supermoon — were found in parts of Texas and sections of the Midwest.
